ODBC support

The VA Smalltalk Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) support provides a single interface for maximum interoperability between databases and VA Smalltalk applications. The support lets developers create ODBC 3.0 compliant applications without targeting a specific database management system. Users add the appropriate vendor supplied database drivers to link the application to the database management systems of their choice.

The VA Smalltalk ODBC support was tested using the InterSolv ODBC 3.11 driver pack. Any vendor ODBC drivers used with VA Smalltalk must be at least ODBC Version 3 compliant.

Note:

No ODBC drivers are supplied with VA Smalltalk. Before using the VA Smalltalk supplied ODBC applications, you must first obtain any ODBC drivers you wish to use from your ODBC vendor of choice. Once you obtain the required drivers, you must install them on the appropriate workstation.

The ODBC driver manager library you are using might have a different name than the driver manager library specified by VA Smalltalk. To check the name of the ODBC driver manager library, edit the ABT.INI file and look for the ODBCLibraryName= line in the [PlatformLibrary Name Mappings] stanza. If the value is different than the driver manager library you are using, change this field to the appropriate name.

To use VA Smalltalk ODBC support for Microsoft Access, you must use Microsoft Access 7.0 or above.
